How to Adopt

At P.A.W.S, all of our cats and dogs undergo a minimum assessment period in loving foster homes. We pride ourselves on thoroughly assessing all our animals so we can hand-pick the best home possible.

We have a five-step application process to make sure we match every animal with their perfect home.

5

Complete our application form online. You'll tell us some basic information about you,  your home and your lifestyle along with what you're looking for in a new pet.

We will complete a home check where we find out more about you, and make sure your home is safe for a rescue pet. Homechecks are always completed in person, never by video call.

Once your homecheck is approved, you'll attend a meeting on Zoom. This is an informal call with the P.A.W.S Team and other newly-approved applicants. We'll give you some hints and tips for when you adopt and you can ask our behaviour experts any questions.

Now comes the exciting part - seeing which animals might be a match for you! As you'll now be ready to adopt, you'll get first look at our new animals. Simply let us know if you think you have seen your match based on the descriptions given.

If we agree that this animal might be the one for you, we’ll put you in touch with their foster. You can speak on the phone, have a video call and arrange to meet your chosen animal. We insist on at least one meeting before you commit to adopting, and two visits if you have young children and are adopting a dog.

We're available to adopt!

Thom is a sweet boy who is extremely sociable and loves being around people. In foster he has grown in confidence each month and embraces showering his humans with attention! A busy home with lots going on is just what he needs. Thom thrives in the company of children and we’d love for him to be rehomed with respectful young children who he can watch grow up.

โ€‹

Another playful feline friend would also be a good match for him. In foster, he has enjoyed the company of another cat although would be equally happy to keep all the attention for himself. Having started off on the wrong foot with the resident blind dog, Thom is less fazed by him. We now believe Thom could live with a very calm elderly dog.

โ€‹

Thom can have a sensitive tummy so will need his diet to be monitored and kept to the same food, much to his disgust as this cheeky chappy will often try to steal his human’s food.

Bonnie
2 years old
Female cross breed

Burgess Hill, E.Sussex

Available to adopt. Apply here

Bonnie is looking for an active home with people who can keep up with her energy levels. This girl can walk for hours and still have energy to burn! She is highly intelligent and requires lots of mental stimulation to keep her calm and happy. On walks, she enjoys finding objects to carry and bring home – lost gloves seem to be her favourite

โ€‹

She is a country girl at heart and enjoys the quiet life with lots of green walks, followed by a nice dinner and a snooze on a comfy chair or rug. In foster, Bonnie has made friends with some local dogs and enjoys running and playing with them. She can be anxious and reactive around new dogs and people but has made huge progress with this. With any adoption, we expect animals to take a few steps backwards so Bonnie’s new family will need to be committed and patient with her.

โ€‹

Bonnie cannot live with children full-time but would be happy to spend time alone with a chew or puzzle in another room while children visit. She takes a while to warm up to new people, but with time and patience has turned into a snuggle bug and loves asking her foster for belly rubs. Once she falls in love, she will be your dedicated sidekick for life.

Maple
1.5 years old
Female cross breed
Gravesend, Kent

Available to adopt. Apply here

Maple is just like her name – completely sweet! She is looking for a calm home with patient and confident owners. Having grown in confidence, Maple recently ventured into a family get-together her foster hosted after hiding away to start with. She is not quick to trust strangers and this was a huge development for her. She does have a rather odd fear of cardboard boxes but was recently able to take treats in the same room as one.

โ€‹

Maple gets on very well with other dogs, enjoying the company of the two seniors in her foster home. She is heavily routine focussed and would prefer to be fed and walked at similar times each day. She has been in her foster home for over a year and now lives with a four-month-old baby who she has shown no interest in. Due to her anxieties with loud noises and sudden movements, we can consider a home with calm and respectful children for her.

โ€‹

Maple arrived not neutered and cannot be spayed until three months have passed since her last season. P.A.W.S will cover the cost of neutering should she be adopted before this time has passed. A non-breeding clause will be included in her adoption contract.

Moni
2 years old
Female German Shepherd
Liverpool, Merseyside

Available to adopt. Apply here

Moni is a typical German Shepherd - she is intelligent, goofy and clumsy in equal measures! Her foster describes her as the happiest dog on earth and says nothing fazes her. In recent weeks Moni has been out and about on buses and trains in the busy city centre and showed no anxiety.

Due to her size and gentle nature, small children will often cuddle round her neck or crowd her face. While she will tolerate this, it clearly makes her uncomfortable and her new owners will need to be her voice and put a stop to this. She has enjoyed the company of respectful children she has met. Small dogs and puppies have also jumped up to her which she also does not like. When meeting other dogs Moni raises her paw in excitement. Depending on the other dog’s size she can sometimes end up smacking them in the face, unsurprisingly creating a confused response! She has no ill intentions and can easily be directed away from other dogs if needed. She is highly respectful of the five dogs she shares a home with in foster.

Moni gets on very well with people and has not met one she doesn’t like! Surprisingly for a rescue dog, she prefers the company of men. Once she falls in love with you, you’ll be rewarded with an oversized lap dog and her distinctive happy sounds which sounds a lot like a cow mooing!

Bear
1 year old
Male Chihuahua

Ipswitch, Suffolk

Available to adopt. Apply here

Bear is a small boy with BAGS of energy - without lots of stimulation he can become restless. He is looking for an active home where his exercise needs can be met and where he is not left alone too frequently. Being small and cute, he attracts a lot of attention which he is not comfortable with. He would like his new family to feel confident in being his voice and not allowing strangers to stroke or pick him up.

โ€‹

In foster Bear lives with cats who he ignores for the most part. Being a playful pup, he will sometimes try to chase so will need any feline companion to be bold enough to stand up to him. He has met children from toddler age upwards and enjoys the company of respectful children. He can resource guard with other dogs in the home however lives harmoniously with them most of the time. If homed with another dog, proper supervision and separation at meal/play times must be followed.

โ€‹

Anyone interested in Bear should be aware that he will need more than one meet before adoption. He is wary of strangers and takes time to build a bond. Once he trusts you, you’ll have a guaranteed lap-warmer for life!

Chester
8 months old
Male Domestic Short Hair

Bexhill, E.Sussex

Available to adopt. Apply here

Chester is a typical kitten – fun, loving and adorable! He wants to be a part of everything that’s going on and would thrive in a busy home. After a few months in foster he has calmed down hugely and is no longer nicknamed “The Tornado”!

He lives with cats, dogs and rabbits in foster and gets along with the pack nicely.

He enjoys any toys with string and will often find items to carry around the house with him. He is learning not to jump on the kitchen counters but will need continuous boundaries as with any toddler-aged kitten! His current foster home is unable to shut the kitchen door, although this would be the easiest solution in his new home.

โ€‹

Chester is a social butterfly and is very loving towards adults and children. Having now learnt that using his teeth and claws results in playtime stopping, he is safe to live with children over three years of age. Chester's ideal home would be somewhere he can receive lots of attention with owners who can spend ample time playing and bonding with him.

Patch
1 year old
Male Domestic Short Hair

Brighton, E.Sussex

Available to adopt. Apply here

Patch’s foster describes him as a charming and soppy boy who loves a cuddle. Having arrived in foster rather shy, he is now much more comfortable. He will seek out his foster dad and plonk down next to him demanding a fuss! Quite the independent chap, Patch is happy to entertain himself with toys he can throw around and could be left home alone while his family work or go out socially.

He would be happy to live with other cats or by himself – he has become especially fond of a female kitty in foster and can often be found playing and cuddling with her.
Patch can still be worried by sudden movements but is quicker to settle. He has met some children and seems less worried by them than adults. Boisterous children may be too much for this sensitive boy. He has not met any dogs but may be happy to live with a dog who would ignore him.

As Patch shows no real interest in the outside world, we believe he would be happy to remain as an indoor cat, providing his exercise and play needs can be met by his family.

Casper
3 years old
Male cross breed
Littlehampton, W.Sussex

Available to adopt. Apply here

Casper’s foster describes him as the most loving dog and says he will make a truly great companion for the right person. He has become very affectionate and leans into his foster asking for a fuss. Casper now reacts positively to visitors but will sometimes choose to revert to his safe space for some quiet time.

He gets on well with the cat and two dogs he shares his foster home with and responded extremely well to meeting respectful children. Casper is building confidence on walks and is currently happy with two short walks a day, totalling less than an hour. He is keen to check everything out and looks to his foster for reassurance.

Casper doesn’t quite understand toys yet but enjoys stealing socks and dish cloths from the laundry. He doesn’t destroy them but just takes them his to bed for safe keeping!
